i:cube played the same space in Perth as Rick Wade did two weeks ago and played the set I was expecting from Rick. Deep and dubby tracks, mixed creatively, and through a sound system far superior to the one provided Rick Wade (can't blame him for that, but he did play way too many discoloops: why doesn't he play the sort of tracks he produces?). Cyclone was asking for a definition of deep, suggesting the notion of deepness might be as superficial as some people's interpretations of funk and soul. Well i:cube played the sort of tracks I define deepness by: Moodymann ('I can't kick this feeling', no less), losoul, Aril Brikha, Maurizio (actually, if you want a definition of deep, M4 would be it for me).
I had no expectations as to what i:cube would be like, and maybe that's the secret. [One of the problems I have with the Detroit dj's is I expect them to be amazing, and when they're just good I'm disappointed--Derrick May and Stacey Pullen both did that to me.] Gilb-R played too and was solid. A little too French for me, perhaps: some of his tracks were pushing the saccharine sweet garage factor all the way and fell just this side of cheese. But only just. Cheers Chris
