Er, no, it happens because the security at the pick up points is so poor it's not funny. Airlines, being corporations with powerful shareholders, are trying to save money by way of this cultural fetish called 'downsizing'. Anyone could take your things - and a record box ain't exactly subtle. I know someone who lost all his interview tapes after going os and they gave him a free trip - hardly compensation but... You just have to give them grief over it so they will take measures to stop it happening.
