Darling,
Girls, or for that matter boyz too, are the only ones intimidated by
anythin'
The women are simply not included in the Mens/Boys clubs of techno or dance
producers, hence they do it on their own with no introduction, leg up or
mentoring from any male. Self volition and passion knows no gender. You
either wanna do it or not.
I've found that most of the male producers enter that domain with visions of
glory, money and girlies sparkling in their eyes. Hence (again) the current
status of trite tripe being put out on 12s.
Most of the women that have been seriously producing are doing it because
they REALLY feel the pull and seduction of the music. I believe that is one
thing that does separate the sexes in this thread--What is the motivation??
I'm soooooo bored with the nouveau sex symbol wannabe boy producer/dj,
REALLY. Most os us in this music have found our way to it BECAUSE of the
music first and foremost and we stayed in the "scene" once discovering it in
its essence, because all of a sudden we found kindred spirits and ceased
feeling the alienation of living within our current respective
culture/societies.
The "male" producers that I absolutely love generally had rather rough or
hard lives up till the point where they discovered this music. It literally
gave them a reason to live. I doubt that Richard "Humptyvissiwhatever", for
example, could relate to that(perhaps I'm wrong, but doubt so)
Unfortunately when something like dance music, quintessentially ignored for
the past 15-18 years here in America, reaches a level of popularity because
of the people both producing, managing and marketing it, it attracts more
of,not only folks who genuinely love it but also the supastar wannabees
coming in droves because they couldn't make it as rockstars.
While the ratios being bandied about of male vs. female are certainly valid,
the ratios of genuine female producer/djs vs. cheese dick males with egos
completely out of check...speak for themselves as well. Moreover, as with
anything else in LIFE, women generally have to do it all by themselves
simply because of their sex. Hats off to those that can cut it!!!!!
If a woman is driven by any passion..she will find her way to the goal in
spite of any barriers. Moreover, even the DJ Raps who've tried going
commercial, and there are FAR less of those, still are very talented in
spite of efforts that are always over-judged. She was and always will be a
badass DJ.
At some point there will be a cheesy polar opposite of Richard
"humptyv**90&" in the female form. Its the nature of the beast of this
business, however the plethora of crap wannabe male dj/producers vs. good
djs in general considerably flattens and evens out the ratios of being
discussed.
How about we eliminate a good 50% of the current crop of crap male djs and
start this discussion all over again?? Just a thought.
LG ;)

Hmmm. Well in my personal experience, women are often a bit intimidated
by all of the technology in the studio. I am not attempting to
categorize all women, just all the girls that I have dated and tried to
convince to come work with me in my own studio 8)
