you will probably find it was the 12" version of it from 81,it has a
drumy instrumental intro that simply rox in a very AFX sort of way
,after a couple of min comes that "i can't put you thru to president
Carter" to be followed by the first verse from the regular version,
(which was on the "Tearooms" lp) and then it gets back to that instrumental
thing, classic new wave stuff! (it was also, recently on a chart from the
Ersatz/Adult guy that i think somebody posted here)
that special 12" version is on RCA T22 pc5331 from uk (1981)
strange how many new wave 12" had totaly diffrent versions to the ones that
,were on the 7" charts,(visage - fade to,yello - bostich,talk
talk etc comes to mind) in fact if disco brought the 12",and reggae
the dub on the b-side,new wave was the music that took those diffrent
12" mixes and put them back on special lp's(humen league - dare/
league unlimited orchestra, soft cell - non stop erotic/non stop ecstatic,
the 2 s/t Visage ones, and much much later on KWT with The mix)
