The Barbican is an impressive concert venue, I should also note it's a sit-down venue and I've seen a range of artists from Aphex Twin to Matthew Herbert to Carl Craig's Synthesizer Ensemble play here. I heard comments from people stating that it was an odd venue due to the seated nature. However given the sound, the size and the ability to see, there' very few standing venues that would provide a better package.
Three keyboard stands and a mixing desk; blue light engulfing the stage. Cybotron - Juan Atkins and two others (who at this stage I don't know the identity - people have suggested Mad Mike, Skurge and Aaron Atkins...) walked on stage wearing massive visors, somewhere between welding masks and the huge sun visors favoured by many Chinese people. Ambient noise swirled for several minutes and into the intro of R9. The visuals and lasers quite impressive, it felt quite spartan, a little retro given the typography of the Cybotron logo, their use overall was quite effective and complimentary. A mix of new material interspersed the old - Alleys of Your Mind, Techno City, Cosmic Cars and of course Clear. All up they played for about an hour and 40 mins with no support act. Up until Cosmic Cars there were a few people standing and dancing, but it was this track that got people up and out of their seats and into the isles. Pretty much everyone was standing by the time Clear was played. There was a final encore, new material - soon to be released I hear. A brief snippet of Clear: https://twitter.com/bennglazier/status/1117037628090650624 ...and a few more photos: https://t.co/mvfyMwmZqH I saw one post on twitter from the artist Shur-i-kan who said he left the show as it was a poor man's version of Kraftwerk and the aging crowd were trying to relive their rave days swilling beer from plastic cups. IMHO, ridiculous comments. Apart from a few parents who had brought teenage children, there were very few people under 35, so yes, it was an older crowd. Whilst that was not completely surprising, I thought there may have been a few more given the somewhat recent resurgence of electro thanks to the likes of Stingray amongst others and how popular he was at a gig here in London a few months back. I took three friends along, one who was a fan of the genre, one who was aware of Juan but not so much his music and the other who was just into good music - all enjoyed the gig. Lots of smiling, happy people... If you're on this list, it's a safe bet that you'll enjoy the show. bg On Sat, 13 Apr 2019 at 12:05, Reuben Wheeler <[email protected]> wrote: > Found a couple of videos on twitter: > https://twitter.com/trevorjofficial/status/1116818150266494977?s=21 > https://twitter.com/joemuggs/status/1117003987679629312?s=21 > > Interested to here those who attended thoughts.
