Jungle is what the music was called back when it sounded more "jungly"- crazier drum programming, more emphasis on percussion, etc. The term got dropped and drum n bass came into use when the music began to sound more like, well, drum and bass . Dance music (or all music for that matter) isnt a series of categories with rigid definitions- its a SPECTRUM- a continuous flow. Make a house track. Then add some more "technoey" sounds to it- boom, its a techno track (or a "tech house" track, if theres still alot of "houseyness" in it). Then replace the 4/4 beat with a breakbeat. Boom- its "acid breaks". Add some lush pads and some delayed sexy vocals- its Trance. Ever play "valley of the shadows" on 33? its a Trip Hop record!!! What makes DnB so great is that it progresses so fast and with such vigor that a new term is coined for it every couple of years. (it used to be called Hardcore, remember?). DnB has a true "producers culture" going for it, where everyone is trying to one-up each other with sicker basslines, phatter beats, etc.- unlike hip hop producers culture where its all about HIDING where you ripped off that horn sample from...Or techno producers culture where its all about making sure you're using a real vintage 303 and 909 and 808. Thats why WE are at the forefront of EVERY major sonic development in dance music. Hear all the filtering and wacky effects in Madonna's "MUSIC", thats US, man....
