Lots of the early stuff sounds very DX7 though. Especially the bass and
paino-esque sounds.
I think this can be done too with very advanced analogue synths such as those
from Oberheim & Sequential, the xpander and
Prophet VS, so they are probably those.

But I don't think the synth  they use it that important, their soundsecrets lie
in the inspiring use effects and indeed very warm
compression. As for the EQ it is probably tube based (probably the compressor).
Very expensive stuff, but the EQ could also be the work of an opto-or so called
vactrol compression method. This gives a certain groove to the mix because the
compressor is a bit on the slow side with its attacks and releases (thanks to 
the
use of optical light cells, hence the name
opto-compressor), it also sounds quite warm.
