What I am working on, and indeed what the basis of my toneshift >theory, is
how these effects in perception play in todays *social* >market; what is
the social impact and application of such music and >effects.
I love it when people use words that end with -tion or with -ism to sound
very smart.
Personally? Toneshifting sounds like something that belongs in a room full
of people sitting on pillows wearing robes and rubbing their power crystals
to "align all that is right in the world."
uh huh.
Yeah, after listening to things for a while, you hear different things. And
yeah, when timbres are overlapped, they produce different timbres (judas
priest being sued for murder anyone). Big deal.
As Frued said, "sometimes a cigar is just a cigar."
From what i've been reading from all of you, you make a dj out to be some
kind of shaman, some kind of sonic magician that *hears* these absent
sounds, and is intentionally creating them. And all along, when they spun
two records together, i heard two records being spun together (no matter how
great).
I suggest that a
big draw to things like techno, emotive drugs, and raves, is partly >due to
the lack of imagination going on in the modern world.
you have the *what* right, but not the *why* right here.
Kids ARE into techno, drugs, and raves because of the lack of something in
the modern world, but i don't know if its imagination. Drug use lends
itself more to a lack of emotions as opposed to imagination. Always has,
always will.
I mean, you're talkin about white suburbanite kids who grew up on cable tv,
the internet, Mtv, and their parents never being around. Their lack of
affection IS what draws this type of kid to the 'rave' scene. As always
(and should always be assumed), there are exceptions to this rule.
And I suggest that
this state of constaint and total entertainment and "info-spooning" is
un-natural for the mind and emotional state
ah, again, i feel you're way off base.
the human state of mind IS geared toward info-spooning. People not only
want to be told what to think, they NEED to be told what to think. Its
important to them. Its what ties them all together and gives them unitity.
This is something that has gone on since the begining of man, and will never
change. average people are called that for a reason: they're average.
Since techno and other lyricless dance
music is very limited in its definition and message, it becomes very
appealing because it allows the average mind to imagine and project
(toneshift) in a world where there is little too imagine, the people >seem
to be getting over loaded with interpretation and input.
Interesting. I think you need to follow your own words about "overloaded
with interpretation and input."
Again, this is just coming down to my humble opinion, but the reason that
dance music is popular in our culture IS because of its lack of definition,
but i don't think it has anything to do with toneshifting. I think its
because there IS no message, they don't (as in average people) have to
project a definition. In effect, when they dance, they don't have to think
for once in their lives. Its just dancing.
things like techno and raves become more
and more appealling on vast scales and will continue to do so...
is this why *raves* are on the decline right now? Do we have some utopian
period of creativity and imagination coming up that is causing the *scene*
worldwide to slowly decline?
toneshifting serves as a creative imaginitive outlet to the average person
in an automated world....
Toneshifting serves as a pretty word to make you feel like you invented
something.
I'm not trying to dog on you, but all i see on this is a bunch of stuff that
sounds 'nice,' and sounds ,'smart,' but really is just putting too much
thought into something that is really "just a cigar."
Hey, its nice to see someone have theories, i have my own whack ones, but
for a style of music that was built around pressing buttons on a step
sequencer, you're giving too much credit out.
I hope I never came across like that!! I find merit in everything, even
good old britney spears...
That's good.
But practically everyone on this list DOES come off that way. I was gonna
ask you about your trance tracks on your page (because i myself thought of
you as an elitist), but this former comment of your cleared it up.
