I picked up the Kompakt - Total 2 compilation last weekend and I'm love with the M. Mayer track "Amanda".
The only other Kompakt record I've been inspired to buy so far was the first M. Mayer 12". I see there's a new one, KOM 25. Anyone heard this? How does it compare to the rest of his output? I like the overtly 80's style of Amanda, and the overboard triumphant synths on the first one, but a lot of the other Kompakt stuff I've heard doesn't really grab me as much as say, Perlon, Basic Channel, etc. It almost feels like it's stuck in a grey area between heady dancefloor stuff and super-quirky IDM, never really satisfying my cravings for either. Maybe it just doesn't go over as well in headphones at the record store? So... if you can point me to more Michael Mayer stuff that's worth picking up, or releases on Kompakt that are sure to impress, I'd be much obliged. On that tip, anything that's on this German retro-80s meets German house tip sounds good to me. The Popacid mix of Fackeln Im Sturm by Wolfgang Voigt is another example of this style. I remember somone about a year ago said this style was featured at some club in Germany. The more info the better.
