The 1/8" mini-TRS plugin is woefully inadequate for getting decent fidelity out of a recording. Now it might be interesting for the noise and other artefacts it brings to the sound of a recording, but not as a transparent recording device. There's no reason to make me pay for that audio in and I think a lot of folks felt the same way. Most of the "laptop techno" producers I've seen perform use either a totally software-based sound source or they use some sort of RME Hammerfall-type device (USB/PCMCIA). I applaud Apple on this decision.
