For what it's worth, I've noticed a reversion to more live instruments in deeeep house lately. It reminds me of disco instrumentation, but updated to fit the new mold.
I'd say things are moving in both directions at once though, since many electronic music producers are going to entirely soft set-ups. I think as the scene broadens, and cross-polinations become more frequent, you get more skilled live musicians interested in collaborating, or making these musics themselves, but at the same time, some producers delve further from live instrumentation in a different direction. In short: I think we're just seeing a broadening of the entire electronic music scene. It's growing outside of itself, and also plunging further into itself. Some reach back with a new futuristic twist, others reach forward in previously unknown directions. Some do both. Then there is another aspect of "live" which seems to be growing: more live manipulation of electronic instruments, either as a part of a song, or in reproducing the song live. I can definitely hear more of this in todays innovative music, and I think it's already starting to trickle down. People are getting farther away from "the loop unchanged".
