I think this is what's so crucial. At this point, the development of a "middleground" in the US like there is in the UK is nearly unavoidable (the scale is debatable), and Ford happens to be the first engine of that change. The underground will stay underground, although the players may change. What's so important is that we fight to keep integrity in the local scenes and through independent labels, b/c without that, the national and global undergrounds have no root networks as their anchor. The national scene in the U.S. may very well receive a face-lift as a result of corporate sponsorship, and the deluge of kiddies finding trance will probably plunge onward an upward. Let's keep in mind that there was an underground before, and there will continue to be one, and many of these kids may grow out of what they're first exposed to if we provide an alternative and educate without being too scary. I can only assume this is *part* of the motivation to include some "more popular" acts @ DEMF on the part of C2, and some of the motivation for Atkins, May and Saunderson to tour with Moby et al. All that said, Laura's warning about the specific tactics of Ford should serve as a strong alert to the evils that will lie ahead. Ch-ching: that's my $.02.
