i have a mix-cd by darren emerson from 1994 called psychotrance 2, the sleeve notes describe the music as trance, but, ironically enough, all tracks are by the likes of stefan robbers, sterac, josh wink (liquid summer), the advent, acid jesus. it's techno, pure and simple, but back then classifications didn't matter, there wasn't as much labelling as now, not so much genre-hating - it was either good or bad music.

i have another mix of his (mixmag) that features tracks by the likes of art of trance, chemical (dust) bros but also (one of my favourites) quadrant 'infintion' (?), kenny larkin 'q' and altered states - a track which would definitely appeal to trance djs, as would 'q' and the basic channel track.

emerson's sound has completely changed and has veered towards the commercial end of spectrum, but as this music is now omnipresent it's hard not to make a record that is not commercial (which is not necessarily a bad thing). he is not in the same league as oakenfold. he obviously wants to makes big bucks before he becomes too old for the game, so he prostitutes himself a bit.
