hu 16 The natural world is
never far removed from
the purely
synthetic musical
universe of
Berlin's Monolake, led by
minimal techno machinist
Robert Henke. A
contradiction,
you say? Nein. By
pasting the
sampled sounds of gently
flowing
water and the rhythmic
buzz of
insect life onto a
substructure of
repetitive electronic
dance beats,
Henke and partner Gerhard
Behles may have created the
most beautiful noise to
emerge
from the Chain Reaction
label's
class of 97 which
included
fellow left-field German
geniuses
Porter Ricks, Scion and
Vainqueur. This
Thursday, Henke
brings the touring version
(himself, that is) of
Monolake to
Detroit for the first
time. One has
the feeling Henke would
not play
here if he did not intend to
conquer one of the most
electro-sophisticated
audiences
on the planet. Miss this
show at
your own peril. A live
PA from
Maersk precedes Monolake.
Complementary sound scapes
are provided by DJ Clark
Warner, who has the
records to
make this night even more
memorable. 9:30 p.m. at
detroit
contemporary, 5141 Rosa
Parks
Blvd., Detroit. Call
313-898-4ART.
