Hi Wibo,

/// Hi ken,

You asked

/// I did? :)

>>> So that would be on the 9b record then? (Referring to my statement that
I thought that of the axis 0009 trax, that one was slightly better ...)

/// Tonight I will grab my copies of 9a and 9b and have a thorough listen.
I once read BTW that the official name for 9a was "confidentials"...

Yes, I believe so. But you're right, the whole thing is pretty minimal - the
'Every Dog Has Its Day' stuff is much more impressive and at least sounds
like he put some effort into it!

///Yeah but with "every dog" I get the feeling that some of these tracks are
veeeeery old. If you listen to them you can hear that some of the tracks do
not have as much high tones as others. They are produced with completely
different sound charataristics. And I had a talk with Otto (fellow
technotourist) about these 2 double packs, his theory is that many of these
tracks Jeff did with other people, including Derrick May, but I couldn't say
if that were true. I must say that some of the drumpatterns on these record
could be done by Derrick, especially if you compare them to his
contributions for those early System 7 albums.

Sometimes, I get the impression that even JM himself is pissed off with his
minimal, hard techno brand, but just keeps churning it out 'cause he thinks
there's a demand ... I think the sketchiness of some of these releases is
evidence that he doesn't take a great deal of time on them.

///I get that feeling too, especially on that UFO record (AX24?). Apparently
a Beltram type HARDCORE Hooversound track that some lunatic licensed in as
an "exclusive" for that shitty "Art of connecting" compilation. To me that
record (AX24) took NO time to put together, and it really sounds shit! And
us, techno buying geegs, buy every fart he makes! (yeah I do too! :( )

For me, the last
really outstanding one like this was the Skin Deep EP in 1999, sheer
brilliance and ahead of its time - still sounds good. If you listen to The
Electric Experience from last year on Purposemaker too (like Skin Deep) you
can tell it's just not as subtle, considered and expressive as Skin Deep. He
should make what he likes, then we will too!

///well, do not forget that "if/tango" record (dec 1999), which to me is an
instant classic. And I didn't think of "Metropolis" (the complete album) to
be a bad record either. But Mills thinks in concepts, and with Metropolis
(the album) and Time Machine that concept works. (but the concepts behind
"Waveform TRansmissions" I simply do not get). The Purpose Maker may have
worked on the first 6 releases, but after 7, "Live in Paris"?, he totally
lost it with me. But I still like "the Alarms" though. I get the feeling
that these days his concepts only work on longplayers, and that the shit
that he puts out is merely to keep himself on the map. To me, I wouldn't
mind him winding down his release schedule a bit, but if that would mean a
"transmat-type" release schedule, that's not really my idea. And I still
haven't bought PM14.

///But since his part with Robert Hood he is letting other people in, like
Petar Dundov (gonna pick up his CD tomorow) and my other fellow
technotourist KJ who got a mail back from JM, asking for a longer version of
a certain track of a demo that KJ send him. So good stuff is coming!!!

Peace,

/// And you,

Wibo / Novell / Barings Amsterdam
