Within what we call electronic music these days, HipHop has taken hold,
resulting in an ever growing number of artists who approach HipHop from a
completely new direction. What remains constant is the deep belief in the
funk, the break and the power of bass. And what has disappeared is the tired
lexicon of the overused sample library.

Be it at the ~scape headquarters or at one of their numerous club nights,
HipHop made it into the record box a long time ago. After Dub (part 1) and
Jazz (part 2), it was a logical step to dedicate the third part of ~scape's
Staedtizism label compilation series to HipHop. A lifestyle and a musical
genre open to all kinds of influences and references, the artists involved
found diverse starting-points in creating individual takes on HipHop.

Andrew Pekler, Jan Jelinek & Bus clock in somewhere between jazz and weird
funk. Cappablack from Japan and John Tejada - who teams up with Divine
Styler - fan an earthquake full of scratch-inspired old skool attacks. Kit
Clayton's unmistakable concoction of CutUp-R&B-Hop challenges Timbaland, but
the same time, invites him to hang out in San Francisco.

In the meantime, Thomas Fehlman is more interested in the relaxing power of
the break and how beautifully crafted dub chords can best work with it,
resulting in a wonderful rainbow track designed for listening to just after
a thunderstorm.

Deadbeat from Montreal approach HipHop from a much darker angle and take
advantage of the tricks of minimal techno. Process then hit the brakes quite
heavily and delete sounds, just to make sure that his slow-motion jazz fits
on top of the break. Gazoo (aka Dan Bell) follows this strategy, although he
spells jazz with a Detroit-dawn-techno bass drum.

Antonelli Electr. join in with a cute little technogroove at which point
everybody goes and sits in the sun. And System are doing research on the
occurrence of HipHop in Danish minimalism and win the Nobel Prize.
