2001 Detroit Music Awards nominee Gary Martin although newly signed to
eclectic UK label exceptional is no beginner in making music

Widely respected by the underground cognoscenti Detroit based Martin has
already released over 30 records - many on his own Teknotika imprint. As
well as writing and recording his own tracks Gary is also well known as a
producer, band leader and DJ and is generally regarded as one of todays more
adventurous and entertaining artists.

Previous releases have regularly featured in the top ten lists of DJs such
as Sven Vath and Laurent Garnier, and it is certainly true that most fans of
electronic music are familiar with either Teknotika, Gary Martin or his Gigi
Galaxy alias.

Gary is a frequent visitor to Europe as a DJ delivering a powerful and
moving set of tribal, house, and funky techno. He is a favourite in Paris
since his first trip at the Aquaplaning Festival in 1999, and has since DJ'd
at The Rex there, The Loft in Switzerland, and the 7th House in Istanbul,
amongst others.

The first single to be released on exceptional is taken from the forthcoming
album, 'Vive la Difference' - due out in late October on exceptional.

Pimping People in High Places (album version) is based around an old school
skipping rhythm pattern, with some subtle filtered tribal drums adding extra
impetus. A snatched vocal yell gives more yesteryear flavour, but the deep
low-end melody and slightly sinister keys bring it bang up to date. The
identity of the track is set in place with the dark mantra of the title
repeating throughout.

Pimping People in High places ( Gigi Galaxy mix) - The momentum of this
remix is less linear, with an off-beat less obvious drive. The sonic
template is faithful to the original, with more focus given to the titling
vocal line. Other house inflected vocal elements work away in the
background, as other instrumental aspects filter in and out over some
unsettling washes.

Other notable Teknotika singles include:

Tiger Trance: An underground hit in 1994, don't let the name fool you. This
is one of the first loop based tribal tracks.
Black Forest: This track is played in all the top name techno sets.
Casa Cugat: A progressive latin/disco number on Kevin Saunderson's label,
KMS Productions.

** Gary Martin will be playing (DJ set) at Flux, Mass (Brixton) on Saturday,
August 31st, alongside Stacey Pullen and Ben Sims. **
