***well put. it used to be minimal = repetitive = soothing = trance-like, but now it is TRANCE! with a whole new meaning and all the mags with the half-naked boys and girls and the superficiality of it all in there. Other good examples of little t trance are those early Hoods on Mplant; like, The Protein Valve EP is totally trance-inducing, but it sure ain't TRANCE! music. I remember a few years back I got a call during my live radio show from a teacher who worked with mentally challenged kids; he said they listened to my show every week during class because the repetitive rhythms of the music really calmed them down; he called the music trance-like and I understood exactly where he was coming from. It was interesting to see/hear that minimal detroit techno (at the time bell, hawtin, banks, burdens, hood, mills, et al) was providing listening pleasure and mental help at the same time for different listeners. Music really is good therapy, for the soul and for one's mental health. I remember times years ago when I was really feeling blue and listening to Inner City's albums over and over (the vocal stuff like hallelujah, let it reign, do you love how it feels?, good life, etc,--pardon my screwing up song titles, i've been getting by on almost no sleep lately and my memory is affected by that) would really bring me out of a slump. "let me take you to a place i know you wanna go..it's a good life".
