Thanks for the links, I also interested in the club nights at the time, Juan
and Derrick's comments about of the state of the city and the mind set of
the people could easily fit Sheffield at the time.

Although I don't remember the gay scene being that big here. Punk was
kicking off big style and I don't remember any clubs doing "gay" - although
this was probably through a fear more than anything, the gay scene here is
still very much seen and not heard here.

The Punk clubs played a massive mixture of stuff at the time as there wasn't
enough punk records to last a full night, lots of reggae, northern soul and
the odd disco track. The crowds where very mixed but that's a reflection of
a creative time when faced with living in a city of greyness, because they
where the only place something was happening - even if 90% of it was just
chat, but you could have a chat with with the Cabs or members of the League,
in fact you still can.

But going on what I've read so far I'm thinking that Detroit was a little
more open than Sheffield, a trip to any working men's club today will prove
how little progress has been made.
