delany noted that DHALGREN as a place was based on the bombed out riot torn cities of the late sixties. he wanted to evoke that feel, that sense of time and spacelessness. i wouldn't be surprised if he had detroit in mind. i never did finish the book...
but octavia butler, and steven barnes are other excellent sf writers. i haven't come across any that feel like techno though.
