i guess this is mostly for you alex...hey!
it was a fun weekend, tho i forgot how much festivals freak me out. too many
people. too many nasty people. too tired to be around so many people.
most everything i saw at the festival i enjoyed, tho i didnt see a whole
lot.
saturday it was novamen, who were fantastic (nice alden tyrell covers too!
they revealed later that during 'love explosion' they were singing 'f*ck
alden tyrell' and other disses hahaha), legowelt (whose sound sucked
unfortunately, until the last 3 or 4 songs)...came back after dinner to hear
jaylib and pbw, all very nice, pbw played lots of nice disco and funk stuff.
jaylib were jaylib!
sunday, arrived to hear the end of louis haiman's liveset on the mainstage,
which was phenomenal, beautiful and deep, very very transmat..then over to
duplex who were excellent as well. took a break to go to submerge, came back
for orlando, great tracks and great mixing, terrible sound...also there were
so many ravers down there it got me really depressed. so it was nice to
watch ron trent for awhile (where there were virtually no phatdawgs, and
great sound), lots of great prescriptiony house and loads of other good
stuff i'm not remembering now...jamie principle, fingers, a dancemania thing
or two, eddy grant, etc. then tried to watch some francois k, he started
with ur but from there it was really hard and boring. wish i had known T!M
is frame six, and owner of grammar, he has great taste in techno and makes
very very nice tracks himself, but we left without checking..
monday, aardvarck and all out k were very nice, lots of hiphop and dope
broken beats from aardvarck, lots of nice house from all out k. nice relaxed
audience/atmosphere. kenny larkin played a couple nice tracks but was mostly
banging and boring, and the sound was once again too loud/bassy (very good
during aardvarck and christiaan tho). kai alce was great, loads of good
house and old disco etc..genesis live was great, superb drummer, great band
all around, they performed that betty wright song from the omar s.
record..missed most of electrofunk live but what i saw was so dope...kevin
saunderson was godawful, started with drexciya intro from drexciya 4, then
spastik, and big fun and red 3 were in there somewhere, but everything else
was trance/progressive, realllllyy bad...kevin reynolds was insane
good...probably the liveset i enjoyed the most of the whole festival.
recloose started with some nice songs, no ufo's, carl craig remix of la funk
mob, but it was time to leave for the ur party.
afterparties....minto was a madman at the wheel fri night and we arrived at
the green light go party way too late to get in, so we went over to the
ayro/recloose/john arnold etc one, and had a great time. nice interesting
stuff from ayro (great live keys!), extreeeemely good liveset from john
arnold! i love all his housier stuff especially, and just a great
performer..nice to run into the rh guys here too. only negative was that
there was some sleazy gay dude in the audience who kept trying to bump n
grind with me and several others from my crew..
no afterparties for us sat night, just late night denny's. sunday night tho,
novamen and ultradyne (we missed jan d, mesu kasumai, jan d, counter
couture, and polarius/speculator)...just an incredible time, awesome stuff
from novamen, better than their movement performance, and
ultradyne....insane....the sound was thru some pretty pathetic peavey
speakers unfortunately, but the quality of the music...damn....very close
runner up to the ur party....as for that, not even worth describing,
deserves better words than i can say..best liveset i've ever seen, best show
i've ever been to...
techno brings people together was fun too, shake was cracking everybody
up...i agree with that guy. nice dj'ing from strand, nice songs from scan 7,
very tasty food made by trackmaster lou, great set from mitch walcott, great
people. as always meeting people and seeing frieds was the real highlight of
the weekend, nice to finally meet matt macQ! jwan! jason! shawn! curt, adam,
tom and all the other technoirs, kent, john o, alex lugo, toronto and
vancouver peeps, laura and silvan from paris...and to see again dan sicko,
shake, yusef, kj, gabe, bethany, tommy, everyyyybody..and especially all the
dutch people who spent most of the time with, stefan (who had all his gear
with him but nowhere to play! :(), aida, kj, danny, ingmar and overdose,
corine, christiaan and antal, chris & john, mike kivits...and really great
hanging with philip mcgarva mr microworld the whole weekend..deeply regret
not getting to meet robin and chris, and that alex, stewart, tom (?) and
everybody else couldnt make it..
my only real complaints are that it was very frustrating that the sound on
the underground stage consistently sucked, and that the overriding rule for
the sound guys was to make everything as banging as possible...but
generally, is always frustrating trying to enjoy music in such a
setting..but had a good time...it helped that it was the least amount of $$
i ever dropped at the festival, less stress, thanks in no small part to a
hotel discount, which was then divided by 12 (the number of people in our
room)..aieee dios mio..
