Sunday night a small crowd in Iowa City got to see a remarkable musical performance, by Petracovich, who is Jessica Peters in real life. She sings and plays live keyboards, but also uses electronic backing tracks off her laptop and drum machines, and samples xylophone live. Which I guess is the hook that might get you lot out to see her.
She sounds a bit like Mazzy Starr, or Portishead without so much gloom. She also reminds me of early Brian Eno -- Taking Tiger Mountain By Strategy, Before and After Science -- in other words Petracovich makes probably my favorite sort of dreamy, chilled out pop music. And it is refreshing to see someone who plays and sings so well putting their talents to interesting use. Of course I bought both her CDs on the spot, which are wonderful. I happened to be recording for another band playing that night so if you want to hear the board recording of her, drop me a line. Do I seem a fanboy?
