What's brilliant about Jason's stuff is that in anyone else's hands, what he does would sound crap. If you want a more serious consideration of his take on sample appropriation here it is: Jason's aesthetic eschews irony - anything he samples, he samples out of a genuine love for the source material, and he respects it enough to avoid the Will Smith impulse. He's not borrowing hooks, he's repurposing individual hits and flourishes to make a hyped up, cartoonish, maximalist bricolage. Then, to sell it to the audience, he makes a complete ass of himself onstage. It might not be to everyone's taste, for sure. But last night's sets passed the most important test: they had everyone dancing, clapping and yelling and acting like fools, and the ladies got freaky. It was big fun.
