After living near there for a while, I can suggest the following:

Smart Shanghai: http://www.smartshanghai.com/events/upcoming -
Great web.zine that covers most of the good events in town.

Antidate Shanghai: http://urgentculture.com/antidote/flyers_01.html
Great local group out there doing "weird" dance music nights

Bon Bon: 2F Yunhai Tower, 1329 Huaihai Zhong Lu (淮海中路1329号,云海大厦2楼)
www.clubbonbon.com - Hawtin played here a few months ago. Great
club, a bit on the expensive side if you are on Chinese.salary - Eddie
Haliwell is there soon.

Wynn Win Club: 5F, Plaza 66, 1266 Nanjing Lu near Shaanxi Nan Lu (
南京西路1266号(陕西路口)恒隆广场 5 搂) - uber high class club from Steve Wynn (the
mega casino owner who owns the new Wynn Hotel in Vegas). Expect to
spend way too much money having too good of a time

and finally... Barbarossa: 231 Nanjing Xi Rd, Peoples Park, behind
Starbucks / next to the Shanghai Art Museum. Walk into the gate next
to the Kathleen's and follow the path.
near Huangpi Road (南京西路231号,人民公园内) - www.barbarossa.com.cn - AMAZING
club in the middle of People's Park (imagine a huge 3 story club in
the middle of Central Park that is bumping every night of the week).
They have great downtempo -- and wonderful fancy drinks. ;)

There are many American language magazines located throughout town.
Grab one and see what's up.

As for record shops, I couldn't find any -- everyone uses final
scratch. Don't expect to sleep if you don't want to. Carry around
the WRITTEN chinese characters of your flat/hotel. When you are
drunk at 4 AM, trying to get home: Chinese is difficult to speak.

p.s. check out Paulaner Brewhaus at 150 Fen Yang Road.
http://www.wcities.com/en/record/,32732/79/record.html Great beer.
filled with expats looking for a good time.

There's an Australian expat Michelle who runs a restaurant there -
quite famed. ;) I hear the bar scene there is excellent.
