some comments...(opinions). tomorrow 001: jeff mills-preview if you havent heard about it yet, this record has as much surprise as any jeff record, yet possibly more. the theme of the label is the future, obviously, and according to jeff it is aimed at "making you feel a certain way." the music compositions on this record reflect this goal and idea. they seem to boil over with a message inside. yet to compound the point to the listener even more deeply, there is a very interesting vocal recording (anonymous interview) that leaves a lasting impression. tomorrow 001 is another piece of evidence supporting the fact that jeff is a step ahead and everything he does is perpetually new, quite significant, and different, regardless of what people think of it. there is a stong concept conveyed on this record and it succeeds in making the listener realize that concept very effectively. flavor is supplied fully. while some may look upon this release as silly because some of the vinyl space is compromised for "talking," i prefer the substance the release has to offer. this is my objective analysis in the sense that this release can work this way without taking into consideration that it is made by a great producer...
tresor: the advent- sound sketches #2 2x12" there tends to be a dichotomy in the fanbase of the advent. some are sick of his records due to them having similar elements in every release without apparent progression and evolution, and some enjoy his work because it simply kicks ass as far as energetic floor techno goes. i am of the latter...cisco's technique of percussion progression and intensity escalation has been reproduced many times on his releases and for me has a consistent positive form, regardless of how fresh it sounds from the last release. i am quite enthusiastic about this release do to the fact that it has subtle added variation absent in most of his other recent outputs. a couple of the tracks have episodes and sounds part of the way through which differ from the themes placed in the beginning, done in a very funky way. good stuff.this record drives home the reminder that dancing is a huge part of techno. drama: floorplan(robert hood)- burner/come on/rock awesome. what i love about hood records like this is his signature technique of taking very simple 909 elements and simple sounds and samples and working them into a maximum funk. it is all in the swing and rhythm shifts. downwards: hostage- consumer device another downwards ALREADY? awesome, as far as I'm concerned. but this one is quite a change if you are a knowledged fan of regis' label. it is a very different sound, rough and rather dated at that. as people have said, it is very hardwax...94-ish style. im convinced it is old female material resurfacing. good abrasive techno. planet e: common factor- northern nights nick (common factor) is an absolute great when it comes to his house-funk-techno mutants like this one. the sounds are warm, funky, gorgeous...his records push the envelope of amazing house for me. well produced and thought out... --> mumtaz e-legal underground, chicago http://www2.uic.edu/~zlubin1 [EMAIL PROTECTED]
