I think it all depends on the printer (driver)

some printers offer a "direct print" feature

in which case

lpr -s ... -o l "1.pdf"

actually works. (or, to find out, just drag and drop the pdf file to a printer 
shortcut on the desktop and see what happens)

otherwise, the printer will just print out the raw pdf source.
