Michael, If possible, look at the HTTP server for more descriptive information with that error.
My first thought was that a downgrade was occurring, from HTTPS to HTTP, and the HTTP server required something to correctly do the downgrade. We've never been able to reproduce it since they have around 200 iPads at times - which we don't - and they also have done some customizations which make it hard to isolate the problem.
