This may be related. When an object lies on the right (or maybe bottom too) of a window boundary, trying to change the size of the window makes it expand like you described. I get bit by this when a user double clicks a list form line to open an edit form in the same window. If the user makes the window smaller and closes the edit form, one of the list form's objects may lie on the window boundary and the out of control expansion can occur.
