This is in fact my standard method of upgrading.  I have successfully
upgraded 64Studio, Debian, and Ubuntu.

This ability is what won me away from Mandrake back in the 90s.  I have
been a Debian (and now Ubuntu as well) guy ever since.

Where you run into problems is when you start adding 3rd party
repositories.  You may wish to disable those when upgrading, possibly
even removing those packages that you installed from those repositories.

Even still, my laptop has a large number of repositories, and I have
been able to upgrade it, albeit with some massaging on my part.  The
take home message is that most problems can be overcome without a reinstall.

Of course, this is only my experience, YMMV.
