I use one every day in my Acer Aspire One. It shows up just like any
other ATA/SATA storage device. I am using XUbuntu on this laptop and it
was detected by the alternate (non-gui, non-live) installer. Not sure
what you are looking for exactly. It stores and retrieves data as you
would expect. The performance is comparable to other hard drives.

For my DAW I still use regular hard drives, the price per GB is an order
of magnitude better for standard drives. If you are intent on spending
money you may be better served with the 10k RPM drives.
