Hi *list* :)

I'm near to do the same as Arthur, who is using Linux on a pure Intel
machine. Using Linux for nearly everything, but arts.

The short version for the list, resp. 4 questions:

Is Qtractor available for 64 Studio 2.1?
Is Rosegarden 1.6.x available for 64 Studio 2.1?
Is there another application able to play soundfonts, but fluidsynth?
Is it possible that Linux MIDI sequencers are only fine for 32-bit,
resp. is someone using a 64-bit Linux and any Linux MIDI sequencer?

I've done a test with Qtractor for Suse 11.0 and for Suse fluidsynth
isn't fine, when running Qtractor, but Qtractor maybe is the first Linux
sequencer that is fine.

The long version for Arthur and anybody who is interested:

Thank you for the informations about Windows *Arthur* :)

Are you running a 32-bit or 64-bit Windows?

I had Birthday at November 16. and because I don't wished to have a
party, I tried to make music at the 15. and 16..

Distro: Suse 11.0
Kernel: 2.6.25.18-0.2-x86_64 (repository "updates")
ALSA: 1.0.16-39.1-x86_64 alsa-firmware 1.0.16-24.1-noarch (repository OSS)
JACK: 0.109.2-36.1-x86_64 (repository "OSS")
QjackCtl: 0.3.3.6 (self compiled CVS version, that didn't run, when
Qtractor was used)
Sequencer: Qtractor 0.2.2-0.pm1-x86_64 (repository "packman")

I run jack -R -p128 -dalsa -p48000 -p256 -n2 -D -Chw:0 -Phw:0, alsa
-p256 instead of -p128 as usual, because when using the usual latency of
5.33ms I got xruns, so I had to go on with 10.7 ms. I didn't start
QjackCtl, Qtractor dosn't need this. It's very good that Qtractor can
restore the ALSA MIDI connections. Qtractor don't restores the audio
connections correct, but jack_snapshot is able to do this.

Qtractor was using the fluidsynth-dssi 0.9.1-188.1-x86_64.

Qtractors stereo audio outputs were connected to the mixer jackEQ
0.4.1-0.pm.2 (repository "Packman"), as reverb I connected jconv
0.2.0-0.pm.2-x86_64 (repository "Packman") with jackEQ too and the
stereo output of jackEQ was connected to JAMin 0.95.0-193.1-x86_64
(repository "OSS"), used as compressor. JAMin's outputs were connected
to the Envy24 sound card.

MIDI in for Qtractor, by an USB device, was connected with my master
keyboard, a DX7 and Qtractor MIDI metronome out, by the the same USB
device, was connected with a D4.

I recorded MIDI, just for one Track and 2 bars, I quantized the note on
events. So far everything was fine. Then I tried to check out which
soundfont drum kit will be the best, to play those 2 bars. I can select
another soundfont one time, selecting another soundfont a second time
causes a crash.

Running only jackd, Qtractor and Qsynth 0.3.3-0.pm.2-x86_64 (repository
"Packman") instead of fluidsynth-dssi didn't change anything. I didn't
run jackEQ, jconv and JAMin any more.

Maybe Qtractor is fine, but fluidsynth-dssi and Qsynth aren't fine when
running Qtractor. Running Qsynth with one engine might be fine, but
running more than one engine will result in crashes, when editing Qsynth.

Fluidsynth and libfluidsynth1 were 1.0.8-50.1-x86_64 (repository "OSS").
In the Packman repository the versions are 1.0.8-0.pm.1-x86_64. Maybe
Packman makes this available because of well known troubles with the OSS
versions.

I will give Linux three last chances, the first by using fluidsynth from
the Packman repository. The second, I will see if there is another
application but fluidsynth, that can play soundfounts and the third will
be, to take a look, if there is still a Rosegarden version 1.6.x in any
64 Studio 2.1 or Suse 11.0 repository. I had to many crashes with
Rosegarden 1.6. too, but Rosegarden was able to record MIDI and audio,
maybe Rosegarden 1.6.x is fine with a newer kernel and newer audio
applications. If this won't work, I won't spend again money in hardware,
that might or might not be fine with Linux. I also won't spent money to
get my Atari ST repaired, because I can't be sure that Ardour,
Fluidsynth etc. will be really fine, when running in sync with my Atari
ST's Cubase.

As far as I know, my grandpas died around the age of 40, my father died
when he was 59 and I'm 42 now. The earth won't become a better place,
when I'm using Linux, because of ethic issues. The earth won't become a
more worse place, when I'm using Windows, with or without cracks.

I will produce music for animation films and things like that. I
unlearnt a lot of my musical capabilities. I won't waste lifetime and
unlearn more of my capabilities any more.

To install a Windows, I need to erase one of my Linux :(.

Cheers,
Ralf
