Hi :)

while one problem is solved, another problem appears, but at the end
everything is fine.

The short version: Please add pppoeconf to the GNOM-menu and remove odd
GUIs that won't do their job, or that sometimes only do their job for
GNOME (for settings that are not specific only for GNOME). By the way,
something useful like alacarte should be installed by default, but it isn't.

The long version about PPPoE and ntpdate:

After installing 3.0-beta3 and using the GNOME GUI to set PPPoE I had
this trouble:

After Each boot I had to RIGHT-CLICK the nm-applet in the panel and
there to disable the Networking, then I had to CLICK the nm-applet, then
to CLICK the manual configuration, then to unlock and after that to
enable the point to point connection, at the end I had to RIGHT-CLICK
the applet again and to enable the Networking.

This didn't work for KDE4 ;).

To make it possible, to run ntpdate manually in the terminal, I had to
set configuration for the panel clock to manual, but I only need to do
it one time and from that time on it was fine with each boot.

I run # cp /etc/ppp/peers/dsl-provider /etc/ppp/dsl-provider.COPY to be
safe and then I run # pppoeconf and now with each boot I'm connected
automatically to the net, but even if the configuration for the panel
clock is set to manual, it isn't possible to run ntpdate manually any
more, the socket again is in use.

I don't know anything about /etc/init.d/ntp, so I don't want to
manipulate this file.

I had to run

# /etc/init.d/ntp stop

before I could run ntpdate.

To solve this I tried

# mv -T /etc/init.d/ntp /etc/FROM_init.d_A_COPY_OF_ntp

and it is working. After removing the script I can notice no
disadvantage. Can there be any disadvantages?

Now I'm able to start with KDE4 or GNOME without the need to connect
manually to the net by so many steps.

Resume: Setting PPPoE for Hardy, resp. 3.0-beta3 is as easy as it is for
64 Studio 2.1, but the GNOME tools are sucking. It would be good to have
pppoeconf in GNOME-menu > System > ... instead of that GUIs that only
set 64 Studio for GNOME.

Having a script that runs ntp automatically might be okay, I don't like
it, but I guess there will be more people who prefer a script, than to
run ntpdate manually.

The trouble with the graphics might be similar easy to solve, anyhow
there is the need to fix some things that should work automatically.

Cheers,
Ralf
