"Physical Address Extension".  Most CPUs made in the last 5 years should
support this.  The only recent machine that I have encountered that did
not support this feature is the eeePC 701 with that weird and horrible
under-clocked celeron.  There may be other processors out there that
have this problem, I just have never had my hands on one.

What this means is that you will pretty much have to build your own
kernel or find one that is built without PAE.

You may wish to check out http://array.org/ubuntu/ which has kernels
built specifically for those CPUs.  I know this guy personally and we
have talked about including the RT patches in his kernel, but to my
knowledge this has not happened yet (basically I lost interest once my
initial netbook love affair wore off).

Out of curiosity, what kind of machine are you trying to install on?
