The 3.0-beta series shares some packages with Hardy, but it's a different distro. I think the installer you are looking for is gdebi: http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/gdebi We prefer synaptic, as it encourages people to download binaries from trusted repositories. Using gdebi is more like the Windows way of doing things, where people grab packages from all over the place and just hope that they will work. Cheers!
