I would go with a Garmin product. Lots of their devices are supported in the 
Linux kernel. After you plug the gps in, it looks like a serial port. After 
that, you can write you own progam to get info off the device. Some docs on the 
format are here: http://www8.garmin.com/support/commProtocol.html .  Or you can 
use something like gpsd - http://gpsd.berlios.de/, gpsbabel -  
http://www.gpsbabel.org/, etc. to get data off your device.

If for some reason you don't want to use a Garmin product, for best results, 
make sure the device looks like a serial port when you plug it into your 
computer. Also make sure the device can output one of the popular formats like 
NEMA 0183, or the Garmin prorietary format.
