There are several somewhat portable pdf rendering libraries out there. Some with mostly C and a little sprinkling of C++ (like mupdf.com). If we had a Javascript interpreter and support or SVG then https://wiki.mozilla.org/PDF.js might be an option once that group irons out the kinks. -jas
