It's like the Oscar concerning Charles Chaplin: the award is less an
honour for the one receiving it (his work speaks by itself) than a late
attempt by the organization to erase the shame of not having already done it...
Plus perhaps the fact that the value of the progress is inverse to the
amount of "buzz" (noise) made about: despite the ubiquitous cries about
"geniuses" everyday, it seems that the main part of what people are
enthousiastic about was done from principles found decades ago by very
few individuals. It is perhaps difficult to find "new" guys worth an
award nowadays. (It reminds me of the advertizing done about the
release of "Windows 95", when the Propagandastaffel cried ubi et orbi
that "this was the OS of the future", for a thing that was still at
least 40 years behind the state of the art---I don't refer to Unix and
the epoch, but even before with the OSes running on the mainframes.)
