It's not unusual for mice to go bad - especially if it's more than a few
years old. Next thing to try would be to re-install the drivers. Go to
Start, Run, and type DEVMGMT.MSC to open Device Manager (in Win7 or
Vista you can type it right into the search box). In Device Manager go
to the category for "mouse" and right click the mouse. Choose to remove
(or uninstall) the mouse. Then click OK back to the desktop and reboot.
Wait till you are at the desktop and see a message at bottom right of
screen saying "your new device is installed and ready to use".
Hopefully the mouse will be fixed?

If not, the next step would be to try a different mouse if possible. If
the mouse is USB, you can just unplug it and plug a different USB mouse
in to see if it works. It's pretty unusual for the problem to be
related to your computer's onboard controller. So I'm betting you just
need a new mouse.

Good luck,
Donk
PS: (is the computer running very, very slow and laggy? If so, it might
just "seem" like the double click function is off. She might need to
clean up the PC of excess background programs and malware, etc. to try
to speed up the operation).
