A couple of thoughts: I bought a tablet thinking I would be hitting the hot spots. Some of the areas I go to I don't have wireless or I don't know the passwords. I tend to download video content and watch it in those areas. My 16 gig SD card holds a lot. It has the Kindle App and games!
If you had a smart phone it would play that video from the SD card also. It would also store books through the Kindle App. You mentioned Netzero. If the area you are in has a land telephone line, Netzero offers free dial-up for 10 hours a month. This is good enough for email but don't even think about streaming video or viewing most web pages.
