First thing I would try would be to make sure the external monitor port is enabled. Check in Vista's control panel display settings, and check in your laptop's BIOS settings (I think you press F2 at bootup on Sattelites?). Also, your laptop has a function key that will toggle between the built-in screen and the external monitor. Maybe Fn + F5 keys? Check your manual.
