I would guess the reader was simply frustrated.  When it appears
some of the standards might be bent or added to in a non-standard
manner, it makes it difficult to know which features to hack,
leave alone, add to, etc.  Reminds me of the old Bell Unix vs
Berkeley Unix days.  They always fought the "great unification"
solution too -- knowing it wasn't going to happen.  My solution,
then as now, is to use as many as needed to get whatever job
that needs doing done, while still dreaming about the one perfect
program that ties all the features together in a single wonderful
program.  (cracking up)
