If it's to any help, Mozilla quits when the last window is closed.

Since AbiWord is quick to startup (unlike Mozilla), why not simply hide 
the whole MDI/SDI idea to the user and just:

1. Open up a new document whenever the app is launched (regardless if 
it's already running). This would imply removing the splashscreen.

2. Close a window if `Close' is chosen.

Simple, coherent and elegant.
