i think i know this one, If you use the native Abiword format this is not a problem.
it is specific to when you are using Microsoft Word Documents Because abiword does not really have true Microsoft Word .doc support (it uses Renamed Rich Text Format .rtf) then when you save from .doc you are Saving As RTF and data could be irreversibly lost. It would be unsafe to allow user to Save As when such data loss could occur. This is a minor annoyance but acceptable compared to the flood of naive people who were complaining that Abiword did not support microsoft .doc even though Rich Text Format is perfectly compatible. (Renaming .rtf .doc is acceptable to Microsoft word for Historical reasons. Hell, renaming .txt to .doc is acceptable We tried unsuccesfully to educate our users to this workaround but eventaully caved an implemented the current solution. This is a bit of an FAQ, i have seen it several times in bugzilla. I know most of the developers dont like distracting the users with lots of error messages (too many messages and the users start to ignore them) but perhaps in this case it would be worth providing a warning message.
