Thanks for mentioning the response (Rui and Pierre) -- it turns out that 
kmail  (1.4.3) does have a Reply List option on the menu (not on the 
toolbar) and also has a shortcut key (L).  A new habit to develop. ;-)

Still, for the record, my position is that the default response should 
be to the list.  (And I'll keep quiet now. ;-)
