I would suggest looking for the problem in your apsfilter/printcap setup.
In Debian, I had better luck using magicfilter than apsfilter, so you might
consider a magicfilter printer config as part of your troubleshooting
effort.

I also think the debian-user list would be a better information resource
for shaking this problem loose. I have had excellent results with it on
printer problems.

The short answer is that the problem is not in AbiWord, in my opinion.
