spell checking problems

I'm trying to write a novel using abiword, and I'm having trouble with the spellchecking feature. All of the words that I make up for use in the novel are not being added to the dictionary. So when I reload the document to make changes to my file I have to redo adding in the words that should have been saved. Am I just doing something wrong or is this a bug in the program. Thanks in advance.
