This feature has been declined numerous time. We don't want to cheat our users with that kind of design flaws. See bug 1410 <http://bugzilla.abisource.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1410> However it is still open. BTW Word sets itself as the RTF opener upon install. So that shouldn't be a problem at all to have RTF files on a standard Windows/Office setup.
