I suggest you check the AbiWord bugzilla, and if there is a request for mail merge, create yourself an account and vote for it. If not, file it as a request for enhancement. It won't be in 1.0 (the feature set is now basically fixed), but is the sort of thing that is likely to get incorporated later.
