Hi Reuben,
          The font situation is rather hard to fix before Gtk 2.0. There
are various solutions available.

You can 

1. Steal some true type fonts from a windows partition. Tomas Frydich has
done a great job in getting these to work. However you can't print them in
gnome-print.

2. A second solution is to use a utility called gtkxsft (I think) which
will make our fonts look MUCH better if your have recent version of
Xfree86.

I think you need 4.10. However this little utility does not work with
non-western Europen fonts.

I recently discovered that TeTex has a nice collection of Type 1
fonts. I'm looking to see if these can be used by abiword too.
