They indicate two different computer architectures: i386
indicates Intel 386 and subsequent processors (i486 and
Pentium/Pro/MMX/II/III/4), as well as compatible processors
from AMD, Cyrix, VIA and others. PPC stands for PowerPC, a
more recent computer architecture devised by IBM, Motorola
and Apple, and used mostly, but not exclusively, on Apple
iMacs, PowerMacs and PowerBooks.

If you have a Windows compatible PC then you are using an
x86 computer and must download the i386 files. If you have a
PowerMac or ther PowerPC computer, then you must download
the PPC files.

I hope you will find this information useful.
